Description
The MIDWAY VILLAGE bench silhouette recalls that of a skateboard bench, a timeless symbol of urban counterculture.
Its bronze finish piece mimics the texture of OSB (Oriented Strand Board), a common material used in packaging crates, created by layering small strips of wood. In keeping with Virgil's distinctive style, the piece draws inspiration from everyday street life and ordinary objects, skillfully achieving a trompe l’oeil effect with a more sophisticated material.
The edges, adorned with vibrant yellow fluorescent spray paint, serve a purpose beyond aesthetics; they exude a sense of vitality, reminiscent of the rise of street art.
It isn’t just a seating object: it provides a glimpse into eras when the streets serve as a playground, a canvas for experimentation, and sometimes, a platform for rebellion.
..."In the gray zone between the sculptural and the utilitarian, Virgil Abloh invites us to close our eyes: the memory of form, color and body contact with the material plunges us outside, into the street. Or, as the artist puts it, the feeling that the street is still alive, inside."...
