Founded in 1954 by Gio Ponti, one of the masters of Italian design, the Compasso d’Oro award was originally intended to encourage and promote Italian creation in the field of industrial design. Nowadays it’s the highest existing distinction in this field. Since its creation, the prize has been awarded to over 300 designers, including Franco Albini, Enzo Mari, Joe Colombo, Ettore Sottsass, Achille Castiglioni, as well as Philippe Starck, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Ron Arad or Konstantin Grcic.
In 2020, over 18 designers were rewarded, including 3 designers in the 'International Compasso d'Oro Awards' category.
